Your story
Elriot is special. As their parent, you've always known this. As they grew up and showed just how precocious they could be in both Math and Physics, the whole ship knew you had a special child on your hands.
Now Elriot wants to join the virtual world. It's way too early! Eliot is 17! You respect your child's intellect. You even mostly respect your child's autonomy. But, as Elriot's parent, it's your job to be the older, wiser one who saves Elriot from themselves.
Is Elriot maybe the best physicist to have ever lived? Of course. Does Elriot probably already know what they want to do with their life? Probably. Does that mean they're ready to irrevocably be stuck at 17 forever in the virtual world? Absolutely NOT.
Like all kids, Elriot thinks they know what they want, but they don't have the years of experience. Your Service years built who you are. You wouldn't give up your parenting years for anything. Elriot is too young to even know what they're missing.
You love Elriot. You admire Elriot. You're proud of Elriot. You'll listen to Elriot, and try to figure out if there's any reasoning that makes sense behind their decision.
You're not going to let them do something stupid.
